St. Thomas More School was founded by...
Monsignor Robert Weis in 1949 and the first class graduated in 1952 with five students. With only three classrooms the first year the school was founded, the Sisters of St. Benedict from Nauvoo, Illinois staffed the school; the first lay teacher did not arrive until 1953. As the school grew, a gym, activity center and nurse’s room were constructed and utilized for both church and school purposes. Over the next four decades, more classrooms and additions were built on to the existing school structure to accommodate the growing student population. Since 2001, St. Thomas More School has been the largest Catholic school in the Diocese of Gary. With renovations done in the summer of 2017, St. Thomas More School has added air conditioning, updated electrical and HVAC units and installed Wi-Fi throughout the building. St. Thomas More School has grown into an exciting, nurturing and academically challenging program since its founding in 1949 and future renovations promise a continual upgrade to the already advanced learning environment. We promise to continue excelling while instilling a well-rounded education filled with various technologies and grounded in Catholic values into our students.
