SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAM

 

Mission Statement

To serve students and staff a quality, affordable meal, adhering to the Dietary Guidelines set by the USDA, to maintain a commitment to fiscal responsibility and to continuously improve on the nutritional integrity of our program.
 

Program Policies

We follow the current Nutritional Standards set by the USDA, serving more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat milks, reduced levels of sodium, saturated fats and no trans-fats, while staying within their caloric requirements.
 
The St. Thomas More School Cafeteria is on the Offer-vs-Serve Program under the USDA Child Nutrition Programs. According to the guidelines, students may decline up to 2 of the 5 required food groups offered in the reimbursable lunch. We regularly encourage students to take all daily options, however, a fruit or a vegetable must be served according to the new USDA guidelines, in addition to 2 other food groups.
 
Each student has their own account and Pin Number. Payments to these accounts can be made with cash, check or charge. Families with more than one student are encouraged to send in ONE check (or cash) in ONE sealed envelope. The envelope should be turned into the homeroom in the morning and labeled with the following information: “LUNCH”, STUDENT’S FULL NAME(S), Teacher’s Name, Amount Enclosed. Cash payments in the lunch line are highly discouraged.
 
Access to on-line account balances and credit card payments can be made by logging onto www.myschoolbucks.com. Follow the simple instructions to set up the initial account. There is no fee to set up the account to access balances. There is, however, a $2.50 fee added to any charges made.

 

Pricing and Payments

Lunch Prices for 2017-2018: Students-$2.35, Reduced Price-$.40, Adults-$3.00 Four varieties of milk will be offered: skim, 1% white, fat-free chocolate and fat-free strawberry. Students at the Weis Center will be offered 1% white and fat-free chocolate. Price for all milk varieties is $.50/half pint. The meal price includes milk (or an 8 oz water bottle option) and is a “unit” price, meaning the price cannot be lowered because a student does not take milk or a food item. Ala carte options and new prices are listed on the menu. Salads must be ordered in the morning with the daily lunch count by 10 a.m. (Milk is NOT included with the salad and is considered an additional ala carte purchase.) Students who are interested in adding an extra (sandwich) to their lunch are asked to order extras with the morning lunch count. Ala carte yogurt ($.70) is available for purchase to students in Grades 1-8 as well as 8 oz water bottles ($.50).
 
***Students are allowed to charge up to 5 meals. If payment is not received after that time, students will be asked to bring a cold lunch or will receive a cheese sandwich until payment can be made. Reminder slips will be handed to students with their negative balance.
